D'habitude, la douance est décrite, jamais expliquée et on propose aux «  surdoués  » des outils censés les aider à s'adapter. Dans cet ouvrage, l'intelligence est replacée dans une perspective anthropologique, celle d'un être humain dont la conscience du temps et de la mort conditionne toute la cognition. Non seulement l'énigme des «  surdoués  » s'y résout, mais cela éclaire certaines angoisses généralement passées sous silence.
Dans ce livre il s'agit d'analyser la «  folie  » ordinaire, celle des gens «  normaux  »,  pour en finir avec la prétendue «  immaturité affective  » des «  surdoués  ». Ce renversement de perspective permet aussi de modifier radicalement la manière de poser certains problèmes très contemporains  : crise de l'autorité, crise des valeurs, quête de la subjectivité, mythe de la modernité désenchantée.
On part ici de l'anthropologie, on emprunte à la philosophie, l'épistémologie, la sociologie, les neurosciences, la psychanalyse, mais il ne s'agit pas que de théorie  : les auteurs travaillent aussi à partir de leur expérience concrète, de cliniciens, d'enseignants, d'êtres humains ayant vécu dans leur chair la souffrance de ce décalage parfois abyssal. Parce qu'il y a urgence à comprendre pour sortir de la sidération.
